Description

The sponsors property allow to specify which stakeholders take interest in creating and optionally maintaining a particular document.

This information is not relevant for every type of document. There is typically no need to specify which stakeholder is interested in the description of a user's role or a given category. But for topics, architecture decisions, or volumes (e.g. the arc42 Template) it helps to define the audience who is willing to provide resources.

Sponsors vs. Audience

Note that sponsors and audience are two different views on parties interested in a document. While sponsors may support the existence of the document for the use of others, the audience property refers to the intended group of readers.
